Space as Place: Community Photowalk with Richard Louissaint

A community photowalk exploring how Black communities in Flatbush transform physical spaces into places of deep meaning

In honor of Black History Month, Kafou Gallery invites you to our inaugural event—a community photowalk exploring how Black communities in Flatbush transform physical spaces into places of deep cultural meaning, resilience, and belonging.

About the Walk

Led by award-winning Haitian-American photographer and filmmaker Richard Louissaint, this photowalk challenges us to document the everyday acts of placemaking that sustain our communities: the corner stores that function as social hubs, the stoops where elders pass down wisdom, the churches that anchor us, the businesses that represent us, the cultural celebrations that spill onto sidewalks.

In the face of gentrification and displacement, how do we make space sacred? How do we create home despite who owns the deed? Bring your camera, your phone, your perspective.
