Forest Flower is a farmer-owned-and-operated cultivator based in Canandaigua, NY, growing in the rich soil pockets right up against the forest line, using what the land already provides: organic soil nutrients, natural forest aquifers, on-site power, no chemical pesticides. Sean and I have our own soft spot for New York maple. MANY winters back, Sean decided he was going to tap the forest a neighbor said he could “have at it” — how hard could it be? He came away from that whole season a little humbled. Drilling the taps at the right angle, the right depth, checking them daily, boiling down what felt like an enormous amount of sap into what turned out to be a small, precious amount of syrup — none of it was as simple as it looks from the outside. It’s the same lesson anyone who’s ever tried to grow real cannabis learns fast: the good stuff takes a season, not a shortcut, and there’s no rushing what the plant is going to do on its own timeline.
So when a farm out in the Finger Lakes region started putting real New York maple syrup and craft cannabis into the same product line, it felt like exactly the kind of thing that belongs on our shelves.
