THC vs. CBD: What’s the Difference?

Two of the most well-known cannabinoids found in cannabis are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). While they share a similar molecular structure, their effects on the body are quite different.

THC

Leads to the “high” sensation commonly associated with cannabis. This interaction also influences dopamine release, affecting pleasure and motivation.

CBD

CBD is considered an anti-inflammatory and recovery product, which works to relax the body and mind. CBD promotes relaxation and wellness without the high. CBD is especially useful for those of us who would like to experience the healing of cannabis without any psychoactive effects.

Other Important Cannabinoids

While THC and CBD get most of the attention, cannabis contains over 100 cannabinoids, each with unique benefits:

  • CBG (Cannabigerol) – Known as the “mother cannabinoid,” CBG has potential neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • CBN (Cannabinol) – Formed when THC ages, CBN is associated with sedative effects.
  • THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin) – May help with appetite suppression and energy boost.

The Role of Terpenes in Cannabis Effects

Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in cannabis (and other plants) that contribute to its scent and effects. Terpenes work in synergy with cannabinoids in what’s known as the entourage effect, enhancing or modifying cannabis’ effects on the body.

How Cannabis Affects Different People

Factors that influence how cannabis affects an individual include:

  • Genetics – ECS sensitivity varies between people.
  • Metabolism – Affects how quickly cannabinoids are processed.
  • Consumption Method – Smoking vs. edibles vs. tinctures all lead to different onset times and intensities.
  • Dosage & Tolerance – Higher doses lead to stronger effects, while regular users may develop tolerance.

Understanding the science behind cannabis allows for more informed choices when selecting strains, consumption methods, and dosage.
